Gulf Medical University From the No.1 private medical university in the Gulf to the leading institute in the world

In just under three decades, Gulf Medical University has undergone a remarkable evolution. Established as the UAE’s first medical university with a teaching hospital, GMU has grown from a regional leader into a formidable presence on the global stage of medical education.
Every great institution reaches a point where success brings with it a larger responsibility. For GMU, that moment has arrived.

Over more than 28 years, the university has built a reputation defined by academic rigor, clinical excellence, and international standards. Its strength lies not only in its programs, but in the ecosystem it has carefully developed. Here, education and healthcare are inseparable. Hospitals function as learning environments, and students begin shaping their professional identity from the very start of their journey.
As its stature has grown, so too has its outlook. The focus is no longer limited to regional leadership. The ambition now is to contribute meaningfully to global healthcare and medical education.

This evolution is deeply rooted in the vision of its Founder President, Dr. Thumbay Moideen. From the outset, he envisioned a model where learning is immersive, clinically driven, and human-centered. His philosophy brought together universities, hospitals, research centers, and communities into a unified academic healthcare ecosystem, a vision that continues to define GMU today.

Over the years, the university has expanded into a comprehensive, multidisciplinary institution encompassing medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, biomedical sciences, health sciences, and healthcare management. Each discipline has been developed with a clear purpose, reflecting the interconnected realities of modern healthcare. Early clinical exposure, simulation-based training, and a strong emphasis on research ensure that students graduate not only with knowledge, but with real-world competence and confidence. The university has the largest clinical training network that benefits everyone who is a part of this large, interconnected ecosystem.

The impact of this approach is evident across the globe. Through Gulf Medical University and an expansive network of hospitals and specialty centers, the Group has treated over 16 million patients from more than 175 nationalities. GMU graduates are making meaningful contributions in hospitals, universities, research institutions, and healthcare organizations worldwide. They lead, innovate, and deliver care across diverse systems and cultures, embodying the university’s core belief that true expertise is built through experience and responsibility.

Yet, GMU’s journey has never been about reaching a destination. Its success in the Gulf has laid the foundation for a far more ambitious future.

Today, the university is entering a new phase of global engagement. It is strengthening international collaborations, expanding its research capabilities, and integrating emerging fields such as digital health and artificial intelligence into its academic framework. Rather than replicating traditional models, GMU is shaping a contemporary vision of medical education that is integrated, agile, interdisciplinary, and socially accountable.

One way in which GMU does this is by offering the Thumbay International Pathway Program. The program gives students the opportunity to study the first three years of their Higher Diploma in Pre-Clinical Sciences at GMU, followed by three years of clinical studies at Partner Universities in Poland, Italy, Malaysia, UK, Americas, Uzbekistan, Romania and Ghana. The program leads to a medical degree (MD or MBBS).

GMU offers a prestigious research grant worth AED 3 million to students who committed to cutting-edge research in the areas of precision oncology and personalised immunotherapy, liquid biopsy and tumour circulating DNA, and so many more.

This forward-thinking approach reflects the changing nature of healthcare itself. Medicine today intersects with technology, data, policy, and global collaboration. Preparing future professionals requires more than academic instruction. It demands the development of judgment, adaptability, and a deep sense of responsibility toward society.

GMU’s integrated ecosystem enables this transformation. Its teaching hospitals, clinical networks, and research platforms ensure that learning is continuously connected to real-world application. Innovation is not theoretical. It is embedded into everyday practice.

The Thumbay College of Management and AI in Healthcare prepares future leaders for the evolving healthcare economy. Its focus on management, economics, and emerging technologies sets GMU on the global academic positioning.

Similarly, the Thumbay College of Veterinary Medicine lays a strong emphasis on evidence-based learning, ethical practice, and community engagement. The curriculum offers progressive exposure to animal handling, simulation-based training, and supervised clinical rotations.

As Chancellor Prof. Manda Venkatramana has often highlighted, the university’s mission extends beyond producing graduates. It is about nurturing leaders and thinkers who will shape the future of healthcare.
This shift from regional excellence to global relevance is not defined by rankings or milestones alone. It is reflected in the institution’s perspective, its partnerships, and the global challenges it chooses to address. GMU today is outward-looking, internationally engaged, and increasingly reflective of a diverse, interconnected world.

Its most significant achievement lies in this transformation. From a leader in the Gulf, it has emerged as an institution of global consequence.

The true measure of a medical university is not the number of degrees it awards, but the impact of its graduates, the knowledge it advances, and the future it helps shape. In that regard, Gulf Medical University has entered a defining era.

A major milestone in this journey was marked on February 9, 2026, when Dr. Thumbay Moideen launched Thumbay Medicity Dubai. Designed as a next-generation academic healthcare destination, it will bring together education, healthcare, and research at scale, with the capacity for 3,000 students, 1,000 employment opportunities, and a dynamic ecosystem serving thousands more.

This is more than expansion. It is a clear signal of intent.
What GMU is building today extends far beyond the region. It is actively shaping the future of global healthcare education.

From modest beginnings in Ajman to building a  globally respected ecosystem of healthcare and
education, his leadership continues to shape the  future of medicine and research.

Dr. Thumbay Moideen stands as one of the Middle East’s most respected and influential business leaders, a visionary who has redefined the intersection of healthcare, education, and research. From humble beginnings to building a globally respected conglomerate, his journey reflects not just entrepreneurial success, but a sustained commitment to societal impact at scale.

Arriving in Ajman in 1997 with limited resources but a clear sense of purpose, Dr. Moideen set out to create institutions that would serve communities while generating meaningful employment. What began as a modest venture has evolved into the Thumbay Group, a multi-sector powerhouse spanning healthcare, medical education, research, diagnostics, retail, hospitality, and technology.

At the heart of his legacy lies the creation of one of the region’s most integrated academic healthcare ecosystems. In a rare full-circle impact, many students educated within his institutions now serve as healthcare leaders across the world, including within the very system he built.

Dr. Moideen’s leadership philosophy is rooted in sustainable growth, where scale never compromises quality. “Success is not measured by wealth, but by the positive impact we create,” he says, a philosophy that defines both the man and the movement he has built. In an era where leadership is often measured in numbers, Dr. Thumbay Moideen stands apart as a builder of institutions, ecosystems, and enduring human value, firmly securing his place among the world’s most respected leaders.
