Why Hong Kong Is the Gateway to Asia’s Next Chapter in MedTech

For years, the global MedTech conversation has largely revolved around North America and Europe. These regions continue to lead in research, venture capital, and breakthrough innovation, but the global innovation landscape is becoming increasingly interconnected. Asia is no longer simply a market to enter once a company has matured. It is increasingly where the next generation of healthcare innovation is developed, tested, financed, and commercialised.

A Unique Position in the Global Innovation Ecosystem

Hong Kong combines the openness and international outlook of a global financial centre with direct access to one of the world’s most dynamic healthcare markets. It is where entrepreneurs, investors, researchers, and industry leaders can collaborate across borders with fewer barriers than almost anywhere else in the region.

Its importance extends well beyond the city itself. Hong Kong serves as the gateway to the Greater Bay Area (GBA), a region of more than 86 million people with an economy valued at approximately US$2 trillion. More importantly, the GBA represents one of the world’s most integrated innovation ecosystems, bringing together research institutions, advanced manufacturing, clinical expertise, technology development, and commercial capabilities within a single interconnected region.

For MedTech companies, this creates an opportunity that is difficult to replicate elsewhere. Innovation does not end in the laboratory. Bringing a medical technology to patients requires clinical validation, regulatory navigation, manufacturing, investment, and partnerships, and the Greater Bay Area offers access to each of these critical stages. That makes it a powerful environment for companies seeking sustainable growth.

At the same time, Hong Kong itself continues to strengthen its position as a global healthcare investment hub. The city has established itself as a leading destination for biotechnology listings, attracting international capital while supporting the growth of healthcare enterprises through a mature financial ecosystem. The numbers illustrate the scale of this shift. Since HKEX introduced its Chapter 18A listing pathway for pre-revenue biotech companies in 2018, issuers have raised approximately US$17.5 billion through biotech IPOs, and HKEX now ranks as the world’s second-largest biotech fundraising hub. More than 260 healthcare and biotech companies are now listed on the exchange, with a combined market capitalisation of roughly HK$4.8 trillion. Combined with a strong legal framework, internationally recognised regulatory standards, and English as a primary language of business, Hong Kong offers an environment that is both globally connected and regionally relevant.

Why Expansion Requires More Than a Good Product

Entering Asia should never be viewed as a simple expansion exercise. One of the most common misconceptions among growing companies is that success in one market automatically translates to success in another. Every healthcare system has its own regulatory frameworks, procurement models, reimbursement pathways, and clinical priorities. Building meaningful relationships with local stakeholders is just as important as developing an innovative product.
This is where collaboration becomes the defining factor.
Innovation today is increasingly shaped by partnerships rather than geography. Startups benefit from engaging with established healthcare providers. Investors gain stronger opportunities when they connect with founders who understand local market dynamics. Governments, industry, and academia all have important roles to play in creating environments where new technologies can move from concept to clinical impact. No single organisation can build these ecosystems alone.
Creating opportunities for meaningful dialogue between innovators, investors, clinicians, policymakers, and healthcare leaders is becoming just as valuable as the technologies themselves. The conversations that take place around partnerships, market access, and investment often determine whether an innovation reaches patients at scale.
This is precisely what MedTech World exists to do. Across Europe, North America, the Middle East, and now Asia, our role is to do the hard work of convening, identifying the right regulators, investors, hospital systems, and innovators for a given market, and bringing them into the same room. That groundwork is rarely visible from the outside, but it is what allows the companies we work with to walk in and focus on what matters most: building the relationships and closing the deals that let them maximise the opportunity in front of them.

A Natural Meeting Point for Global Healthcare Challenges

This is particularly relevant at a time when healthcare systems around the world face growing challenges. Ageing populations, increasing demand for personalised medicine, workforce shortages, and the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence are reshaping how healthcare is delivered. Addressing these challenges requires global cooperation, not isolated innovation.
Hong Kong offers a natural meeting point for these conversations. Its ability to connect international expertise with Asian opportunity makes it more than a financial centre. It is becoming a platform where ideas, investment, and implementation come together.

Having engaged with healthcare innovators across Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia, I have seen firsthand that the most successful companies are those willing to learn from different markets rather than simply export existing models. They understand that sustainable growth comes from listening, collaborating, and building long-term relationships.
This philosophy continues to guide MedTech World as we bring together leaders from across the global healthcare ecosystem. Our role has never been simply to organise events. It is to create environments where conversations become collaborations, and where collaborations ultimately improve patient care.
