Going Green in Healthcare: Medshield’s Kevin Aron Says Medical Schemes Must Lead the Sustainability Charge

In a bold step towards sustainable transformation in the healthcare ecosystem, Medshield Medical Scheme has announced a forward-looking green strategy that places environmental responsibility at the center of its operational and strategic framework. Principal Officer Kevin Aron has called on all medical schemes across South Africa to not only adopt sustainable practices but to actively lead the healthcare sector’s transition to greener, more resilient systems.

Kevin Aron, speaking in recent interviews and thought leadership platforms, emphasized that medical schemes hold a unique position of influence within the healthcare value chain. “Going green isn’t an optional feature it’s essential,” Aron said. “As medical schemes, we hold both the responsibility and the power to transform how healthcare is delivered sustainably.” He highlighted the fact that through procurement standards, benefit design, and engagement with healthcare providers, medical schemes can shape both direct operations and the wider healthcare delivery model.

Medshield has already laid the groundwork by initiating a formal Environmental Management Plan (EMP), which will guide the organization’s transition toward more environmentally conscious practices. This includes energy and resource audits across all facilities, reduced paper consumption through a digitized member services platform, and the incorporation of green procurement policies. These measures are part of a comprehensive sustainability roadmap to be implemented by the end of 2025.

Kevin Aron further linked Medshield’s green mission to its digital transformation agenda. The organization has been moving swiftly towards paperless administration, virtual consultations, and AI-enabled member engagement. These efforts not only reduce the scheme’s environmental footprint but also create a more efficient and member-centric healthcare experience. “Technology, trust, and transformation are the three Ts that will define the future of healthcare,” Aron stated. “And at the heart of that transformation is a commitment to both people and planet.”

The Principal Officer also noted that sustainability in healthcare is closely tied to financial sustainability. Rising medical costs, environmental degradation, and inefficiencies in resource use are interconnected challenges. By focusing on energy efficiency, waste reduction, and responsible sourcing, Medshield aims to contain costs, maintain benefit stability, and future-proof its offerings for the next generation of members.

As part of its upcoming initiatives, Medshield will roll out energy and resource benchmarking across all offices and affiliated partner clinics, establish a supplier code of conduct rooted in environmental responsibility, and launch an internal education campaign for employees and brokers. Additionally, the scheme plans to engage its member base with resources on healthy, eco-conscious lifestyles reaffirming its commitment to total wellness.

Established in 1967, Medshield is one of South Africa’s most trusted and longest-standing open medical schemes. With a reputation for reliability, innovation, and care, the scheme has grown consistently while maintaining a strong focus on service quality and preventive healthcare. Under the leadership of Kevin Aron, Medshield continues to push the envelope not just in member services, but in contributing to a healthier planet.
