Exclusive Interview with : Dr. Dilnawaz Romi
Dr. Romi, could you tell us about your early life and what inspired you to pursue a career in medicine?
I was born and raised in Bettiah, a small town in West Champaran, Bihar. My school and college education were from this town. My father, a leading medical practitioner, was my idol. Like many children, I aspired to follow in my father’s footsteps and dreamed of becoming a doctor.
What motivated you to move to Saudi Arabia, and how was your initial transition?
Saudi Arabia’s appeal lies in its rich cultural heritage, the two Holy Mosques, attractive salary packages, and world-class working environments. Joining Riyadh Military Hospital was a dream come true, as it was one of the best in the Kingdom. Initially, adapting to the new culture was challenging, but over time, Saudi Arabia became my second home, and I built many friendships.
Professional Milestones in Saudi Arabia
What were the most significant milestones in your medical career in Saudi Arabia?
One major milestone was being assigned to the Azizia Palace Clinic, where I served HRH Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz, Minister of Defence and Aviation, and Inspector General of Saudi Arabia. Joining his medical team was a tremendous honor that helped me grow professionally and personally.
How do you perceive the healthcare system in Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Arabia’s healthcare system is world-class, offering services comparable to those in developed nations. The system encompasses exceptional standards from primary care to tertiary care. My role within the Royal Family emphasized the importance of precision and the necessity of constant learning.
What did you learn from working with the Royal Family?
Working with the Royal Family improved my skills as a physician and taught me to be a better listener. The role demanded perfection, continuous education, and staying updated in my field. It also cultivated my attention to detail and reinforced the importance of avoiding unnecessary risks.
Contribution to Education and Community Service
What were your key initiatives as Chairman of the Higher Education Board?
During my tenure, I introduced several reforms, such as after-school coaching classes, direct distribution of books to students, and eliminating garland culture for VIPs at school events. I also promoted sports, extracurricular activities, and direct recruitment of experienced teachers from India.
How did H.E. M.O.H. Farook contribute to Indo-Saudi relations and your journey?
H.E. M.O.H. Farook was an extraordinary leader and a visionary. His efforts strengthened Indo-Saudi relations and culminated in King Abdullah’s historic visit to India as Chief Guest on Republic Day 2006. His support inspired many initiatives for the Indian community, including my appointment as Chairman of the Higher Education Board.

How has Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 influenced the healthcare sector?
Vision 2030, led by HRH Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has propelled Saudi Arabia’s healthcare sector to new heights. The initiative continues to open opportunities for professionals and aims to match global standards in healthcare excellence.
What advice would you give to aspiring physicians in Saudi Arabia?
Aspiring physicians must focus on skill development, continuous learning, and staying updated with global medical advancements. Competence and adaptability are key to thriving in the dynamic healthcare landscape.
How do you view the contribution of Indians in Saudi Arabia’s healthcare sector?
Indians are highly respected in Saudi Arabia for their dedication and work ethic. From blue-collar to white-collar jobs, they play an integral role in the Kingdom. With proper training and education, their contributions can further enrich Saudi Arabia’s healthcare sector.
Personal Insights and Legacy
How has your journey in Saudi Arabia shaped you as a person?
Personally, I’ve developed immense patience and a deeper understanding of people. Professionally, my experiences at Riyadh Military Hospital and with the Royal Family enhanced my skills and broadened my perspective. My faith in Allah has also deepened significantly.
What do you consider the most rewarding moments of your career?
Two moments stand out: working with HRH Crown Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz and serving as Chairman of the Higher Education Board for Indian International Schools in Saudi Arabia. Both roles gave me immense satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment.
At this stage in your life, what keeps you motivated?
I firmly believe that my journey is not yet complete. There are still many goals to achieve, both professionally and socially. In shaa Allah, I strive to make a meaningful impact in every endeavor.
What legacy would you like to leave behind?
I hope to be remembered as someone who contributed to healthcare, education, and community service in meaningful ways. My ultimate goal is to inspire others to strive for excellence and make a positive difference.
